A truly rare and stunning original 18th century Royal Sevres Vincennes Royal porcelain factory, Tea/coffee cup and saucer! This precious and noble set is intricately and lavishly crafted and detailed. The can/cup and saucer are expertly crafted of soft paste French porcelain by Sevres. The Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres is one of the principal European porcelain manufactories. It is located in Sèvres, Hauts-de-Seine, France. It is the continuation of Vincennes porcelain, founded in 1738, which moved to Sèvres in 1756. It has been owned by the French crown or government since 1759, and has always maintained the highest standards of quality. Almost immediately, it replaced Meissen porcelain as the standard-setter among European porcelain factories, retaining this position until at least the 19th century. This fabulous set features the Sevres mark on the bottom and the date code "BB" for 1779; the cup is also marked with 3 individual portraits, hand painted:Charles the 4th , Marguerite de France, S.
The set is ornately hand-painted SIGNED BY THE ARTIST :S ESSE in a Turquoise Blue and gilt neoclassical-inspired Louis XVI design. Both the cup and saucer features gilt arabesque designs adorned with hand-applied minuscule glass "gemstones" of various pretty colors. The saucer features a center medallion with the Royal House of Bourbon triple Fleur de Lys armorial crowned coat of arms surmounted by a red cranberry-bead and gilt border. The cup features similar gilt arabesque and applied glass gemstone decoration, with 3 round medallions hand painted portraits of 3 Monarchs. This 1779 set was most likely created as a celebratory gift with portraiture of the French Royal family, perhaps to celebrate their lives.
The cup and saucer set exemplify the grandeur and wealth of the Bourbon monarchs. Set presents beautifully and is in excellent antique condition, with very minimal display wear and patina commensurate with age(fully original as we found it here in Africa). There is some light wear to gilding decorations. Some of the applied glass gemstones are missing.
Remarkably there are no chips or cracks, no restorations and no hairlines nor crazing, just firing blemishes and small stains congruent with age! This grand and very scarce rare Sevres royal porcelain set will make an outstanding and crowning addition to any fine and well-curated antique porcelain collection. Probably never to be seen again, please see the other listing we have for the PINK equivelant of this Blue set, fully matching this listing, Wow, these 2 to have surfaced here in Colonial Africa at the time, is almost unbelievable, thanks for looking.
